How to Rent a Car in the UAE as a Tourist

Everything you need to know: licence validity, age limit, documents, deposits, insurance, and cross-border travel.
If you’re planning a visit to the UAE and want to get around freely, renting a car is often the most convenient option. But there are some key rules to know—especially if you’re not sure whether your driving licence is valid, or what documents you’ll need to bring. At Alligator.rent, we’ve helped thousands of tourists rent vehicles in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and this guide covers everything you should be aware of before you book.

Can I Use My Home Country’s Driving Licence?

For many nationalities, the answer is yes. Visitors from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, and South Korea can drive in the UAE using their valid home driving licence, as long as they’re holding a tourist visa.

The UAE currently recognizes licences from more than 30 countries. To verify if your licence is accepted, you can check the full list published by the Ministry of Interior. If your country is not listed, you will need to present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your national licence.

What About GCC Licences?

If you’re visiting from a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country—such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, or Qatar—you may drive in the UAE using your GCC-issued licence, whether it’s your own vehicle or a rental. However, once you become a UAE resident, you are required to convert it to a local licence.

When Is an IDP Required?

If your home country is not recognized by the UAE for direct driving licence use, an IDP is mandatory. You’ll need to carry both the IDP and your original licence. The IDP must also have been issued at least 12 months prior. Since regulations can change, it’s wise to contact your rental provider—they can confirm licence eligibility for you in advance.

Minimum Age to Rent a Car

In most cases, the minimum age to rent a car in the UAE is 21 years old. However, for some vehicles—particularly sports cars and luxury models—you may need to be 25+. On Alligator.rent, age requirements are displayed clearly for each vehicle, so there are no surprises at checkout.

What Documents Do I Need?

To rent a car in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, you’ll need the following:
  • A valid passport
  • A tourist visa
  • A home country driving licence (or IDP, if required)
  • A credit card in your name
Most agencies require a credit card, not only for payment but also to hold a security deposit. This is not deducted unless there are traffic fines or vehicle damages.

Understanding Security Deposits

Car rental companies in the UAE place a temporary hold on your credit card as a security deposit. The amount varies depending on the company and car type but is generally released within 30 days of return, assuming no outstanding fines, toll charges (Salik), or damages.

On our platform, we make sure customers are fully informed about the deposit policy in advance. If a customer ever experiences delays in getting their deposit back, they can file a complaint with the Dubai Department of Economic Development (DED).

What Insurance Is Included?

By law, every rental in the UAE includes third-party insurance. This covers basic liability, but you can also choose additional coverage, like collision damage waivers or full protection. Travel insurance may also offer rental car coverage—so be sure to compare options. We give clients the flexibility to add insurance during booking or at vehicle pickup.

Planning to drive to Oman? You’ll need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the rental agency and extra insurance coverage. Not every company supports cross-border travel—but Alligator.rent can arrange the required documents when applicable.

Where Can I Rent a Car?

Pickup points are available across Dubai and other cities. Vehicles can also be delivered on request. Whether you want a compact car, SUV, or supercar—you can find a wide selection online and filter by your preferences.

Tips Before You Drive Away

  • Inspect the car thoroughly before pickup and take photos of any scratches or dents
  • Make sure all issues are noted in the rental agreement
  • Test the air conditioning, lights, and electronics
  • Read the contract carefully—know what’s included and what’s not

Driving Rules in the UAE

  • Drive on the right side of the road
  • Speed is measured in kilometres per hour (km/h)
  • Some highways have minimum speed limits (typically 60 km/h)
  • Zero tolerance for alcohol. If you drink, don’t drive

Thinking About Desert Adventures?

If you plan to take your rental off-road, make sure it’s allowed. Most agencies prohibit off-roading without special insurance, and damage costs can be high. Always travel with a second vehicle and adequate safety gear. Alligator.rent can help arrange off-road-ready SUVs through trusted partners.
